What Should I Expect When My Pet Is Desexed?
At Pet Universe Veterinary Centres, we pride ourselves in providing the very highest standards of general anaesthetic and surgical care.
Your pet’s care is similar to what you would expect when you go to a hospital for a surgical procedure.
How We Care For Your Pet During Anaethesia:
- Pre-anaesthetic blood test to check for dehydration, anaemia and kidney function.
- Sedative injection to reduce pre-surgical stress and facilitate the general anaesthetic.
- 2 types of pain-relieving medications to provide high-grade pain relief for surgery.
- Intravenous fluids are given to maintain blood pressure and blood supply to all organs.
- All pets undergoing surgery are maintained on gaseous anaesthetic machines (just like human hospitals) with an endotracheal tube to maintain their airway.
- State-of-the-art (human hospital standard) anaesthetic monitoring machines ensure the safest procedure so any slight changes in the status of your pet’s anaesthetic will be detected and treated immediately to minimize chances of a serious situation developing.
- Heart and respiratory rates.
- Pulse oximetry (measures pulse strength and the level of oxygenation in your pet’s blood stream)
- Capnography (measures the concentration of anaesthetic gases breathed in and out by the patient)
- Blood pressure
- ECG
During Surgery
- Each of our patients is supplied with their own individually sterilised surgical kits. All of our surgeons wear hats, masks and sterile gloves to ensure the sterility of the procedure. This means that post-operative antibiotics are not required.
- Pain relief is an important part of any surgery and our patients are provided with intra-operative injectable pain relief and a supply of tablets to go home with (cats have an injection instead that lasts for 3 days).
- Patients are provided with 2 post-operative checks as part of our service – one after 2-3 days and another after 10 days (at which time sutures will be removed). We also make a routine post-operative call the day after surgery to ensure that your pet is recovering well.
